It would seem that shorter blades would produce higher RPMs with any given wind
speed. A given blade air-speed will turn faster on a shorter radius. The torque
available to overcome resistance of course goes down with shorter blades. Your
generator obviously is operating at a slow speed on its output curve in this
usage.

That's what it seems like to me.  The longer blades seem to be actually
slowing it down but I have not yet been motivated enough to start carving
blades like Hugh Piggot's.  If I can get a reading of 8 amps maybe then.

Thinking about it a little more, to get the same speed with larger blades, the
blade pitch would need to be lower. Actually, for an ideal blade, the pitch will
vary from the tip of the blade to the center to allow for the varience of blade
"air speed" from the tip to the center.

I have some plans sitting next to me that are like what you described.  The
have a "twist" from the inner part to the ends.  The look like they will
take a lot of work to make  and I'm not really sure how much power to expect
from the eu2000 alternator so I'm hesitating.  If I can get 8 amps or so
with my "new and improved" sewer pipe blades then I'll be more motivated.  I
made a couple more of what I hope are improvements yesterday so now I have
to wait for a windy day.  So far it needs about 15 mph wind to get going and
actually do any charging on a 12 volt battery but works pretty well for
charging at 6 volts and is actually charging if there is enough wind to get
it going.  This sounds an awful lot like what "z" was doing when he first
started working on his micro-hydro.  He ended up getting a different
alternator and I'm beginning to think that the eu2000 stator will need to be
rewound with more turns of smaller wire for low wind areas, but it still
shows some promise for high wind areas with the stock stator.

On top of that I'm worried somone might call Code Enforcement on me so I
need to call them and try to find out if there is a specific tower height,
sweep area, and/or power rating that would be below what they call a "wind
turbine" that would not require a permit.  It seems like they should allow
for experimenting and science fair projects but in this county....

When dealing with the bureaucracy, it is almost always better to beg for
forgiveness (in the rare event you get snared in their net) than to obtain
permission.  YMMV

A better idea might be to get a copy of your local code and read if for
yourself.
