I tested the new 9 volt battery as the smoke alarm was chirping. It showed
8.44 volts. The alarm specifies good quality batteries..so I suppose that is
the problem ?

If you put a meter on it and it shows 8.44 volts then yes the battery pwoer
is down. A meter does not put much of a load on a battery. Once it is
plugged in the item will put a load on the battry and voltage will drop

Makes you wonder how often batteries aren' up to standard. A flashlight
might seem o.k but not last long.

Either the battery is Ni-cad or niMh or dead.
