is it possible to buy somewhere a small steam turbine?
with minimum efficiency of 30% and power ratings from 1kw to 5kw.
i am not intrested in DIY.
tnx

I'm interested as well, but in a smaller size: 1 Watt would be plenty.
What I want to do is set up a small steam-powered generator to recharge
batteries while camping. I'm thinking of using an old pressure cooker for
the boiler, along with a steam engine or turbine to power a dc generator
of some sort.
I want the whole thing to fit inside the pressure cooker for easy
tranportation to the campsite. The output would be directed to a standard
12 volt car-jack, so that I could plug in anything that uses a car
charger.
Is this a foolish, hare-brained scheme? Or might I be able to put this
together and have some fun with it?
Specifically:
I've looked at miniature steam engines on the 'web. I find none with any
output power measurements. Is that because those little steam engines
produce almost no power?
I'm thinking that using a DC motor as a generator might work. What kind of
specs should I look for in order to find a suitable motor?
Will this be all trial and error, or can I calculate the suitability of
the engine and the motor using their specs?
Am I barking up the wrong tree, thinking that I can mate a small/light
steam engine or turbine with a DC motor or other dynamo to charge up my
cellphone? I hae no "feel" whatsoever for the power output of miniature
steam machines, nor the torque necessary to get useful output from a small
DC generator.
Anybody got a seat-of-the-pants asessment of this idea?

There are a number of model steam engines in the couple horsepower
range...both piston and turbine...
Do a google search for "model steam engine"...an example of
one manufacturer....
http://www.jensensteamengines.com/
hope helps...have fun....sno

I had looked at that site previously. Their featured product is a cute
little model power plant, complete with a steam engine and an AC
generator, which lightsup a cute little LED lampost.
That is what made me think that little steam engines may be wholly
unsuitable.
The rest of the sites I get from the Google search seem similar: Cute
little models with no specs for output. IOW, toys.
Which makes me ask my threshold question: Does anyone have a "feel" for
this? Is it maybe workable or definately foolish?

In my opinion...totally usless.
If you want to charge batteries while camping and you don't need much power,
think of solar. If you need a bit more than that, get a small generator (make
it an inverter generator if you can afford it). You could possibly run the
generator just an hour or two a day to charge a battery, but it depends on your
power consumption.
