A few of us are still present, but from here the room looks pretty empty.
The Usenet is almost history, and that's a shame because it gave
discussion groups some organization, and kept everything on one
platform. Now everything is splintered into tens of thousands of forums
and blogs that come and go like the weather.

Of course. It just became very much more quiet when the trolls and
armchair experts decided social media is more to their taste. ;-)

There were two or three new threads a month in 2015.
In 2016 so far, I see only your question, and we're closing on the end
of the first quarter...
Sometimes this is not the fault of the users. Servers can simply dump
this traffic, giving no warning, error message or other info. Readers
can't tell what's going on, except that traffic ceases.
I know the Primus server stopped serving it's clients with a usenet
connection in December 2015. They had been rerouting most traffic
through a third party service for some time. I guess they figured they
could finally pull the plug without significant financial
repercussions.
Has since disavowed any obligation or responsibility to provide the
service. Have been using the increasingly unmentioned service from day
one, though originally through a provider that Primus simply absorbed.
Have had to re-hookup through NewsDemon, a paid service, for a few
dollars a month.
