am trying to find a replacement (read: cheap) for a generator battery.

it's a sealed deep cycle type and about the size of a motorcycle battery.

will any kind do and would any marine non-gel battery work as long as the
dimension
(inside gen coverpanel) are a fit ?

are there some do's and dont's in buying these types of batteries?

dimension

Well, since nobody else said anything yet....

I'm not familiar with generator start batteries.  I don't recall seeing any
deep cycle batteries that size--does yours actually say "deep cycle" on it?
I don't see why it would need to be deep cycle if it is only used to start
the engine.  I would think a lawn tractor starting battery would work and
they are something like $5 at WalMart, I think.  I would prefer a wet cell
that has removable caps because I can do something about it if the
electrolyte level is low.  I like to be able to stick a hydrometer in there
and read the SG.

thanks, will just take the battery with me to Wallyworld and find something with
similar dimensions

I wanted to be sure I did not mess with the electronics as this generator has an
LCD
readout panel with remaining battery life and apparently the control board
communicates with the battery. original battery is YTZ14S and I know there are
compatible types like the MOTOBATT QUADFLEX model MBTX9U

I doubt that it's deep-cycle. Check the numbers on the existing one,
but if it's a <13hp generator, then this type of battery is popular
http://tinyurl.com/mwy7l2   http://tinyurl.com/l5vdxf . Comes in a bunch
of sizes and capacities, and can be installed in any position. Search
for "AGM battery". If that'll do, then shop around, I think I paid
about $5 delivered for one a couple years ago. If it's a larger
generator, or tends to be hard to start, or will be stored in cold
temperatures, then you might want something larger like they use in
garden tractors.

panel cover
