For the 2001, page 206 of the owners manual specifies either 5W-30 or
10W-30 . The local Toyota service center uses either 5W-20 or 10W-20
and claims this to be OK. Is this a problem and how serious, etc. ?

Weird oil choice.
If it never gets above 50 degrees where you live, it is possible you
could get by with 5W/20, but frankly, if Toyota recommends 5W/30, you
ought to use it.
