This is an intermittent problem.
Case 1) Start car, MFD is blank or shows INFO page with no data. For
example, the external temperature is blank.
Case 2) With an empty display, select any button next to the display,
display responds, "Display not connected."
I'm looking for suggestions about why this may be happening.

Loose or corroded MFD cable connector? You can access the connectors by
removing some dash panels. You can scrub-away an oxide coating by
unplugging and plugging a few times.

Thank you, your basic diagnosis corresponds with mine, "Loose or
corroded MFD cable".
Is there someplace in the engine compartment where the MFD cable
passes through the firewall? Wouldn't that also be a place where the
cable could become stressed? (2004 Prius)

The 2004 and early 2005 Prius had MFD problems described at the links found

Thank you, that sure is a thorough diagnosis of a potential cause of
the problem.
