It makes sense that the price of new hybrid vehicles will come down as
the market gets more competitive.  Up to now, Toyota has had it mostly
to themselves with the Prius but the Honda and Ford Fusion vehicles will
give them more competition.  The bottom line is that the hybrid cars are
cheaper to make than 'conventional' cars because they have smaller
internal combustion motors and leave out the transmission, starter
motor, clutch/torque converter, and alternator as well as make other
components electric-powered instead of belt-powered.  The end result is
fewer and smaller parts and simpler assembly which lowers costs
dramatically.  Of course, they also have the increased battery cost to
offset that but the cost is still less.
