Yes, and after about a year, this pump makes a nasty buzzing/grinding noise
every time it runs in cold temperatures.

I hear the same sound when I have to brake frequently on a long downhill
road. Does this mean it pumps each time 3 liters into the container?

That's a different pump.  That's the brake accumulator.

I live in the UK and therefore have the European spec - which doesn't (for
reasons best known to Toyota) have the thermos.  However, about 45 secs to 1
minute after I switch it off the Prius issues a very audible "whirring"
sound which - if there was one - would pass as a very good imitation for
what I imagine the thermos pump would sound like.  Is it one of those bits
that they just leave in cos it's cheaper to do that than omit it at build
(even though it's pumping something to nowhere)?

Regards

Chas
