Can anyone recommend any cheapo DIY ideas on how to exhaust heat from
an attic in a house?  I would like to somehow be able to get the heat
to escape faster from the skylights in two attic rooms.  The thing is,
I don't want to have a hole in the roof for an extractor fan, and I
can't keep the skylights open very wide because the cat will get on
the roof and probably fall off (30-40ft drop).

I was thinking something along the lines of the Autovent Turbo (see
google) that is available for cars, or a similar modified product for
a skylight. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I might suggest one of the many versions of whole house fans adapted
(perhaps simply with a piece of plywood that has a circle cut out) to
fit the skylight. You should be able to open the skylight as wide as
you want as the grills on these fans usually are much too small for
a cat to get through. If the grill isn't that small then you can
always make one yourself out of window screen or welded wire mesh.

Another alternative, if you have a door to the attic, is to cut a large
hole in that door and place the fan there. This will do just about the
same job as the fan in a window, as long as you keep the door closed
while the fan is turned on. Keeping the cat inside should only require
keeping it on the right side the door or, as before, putting up a screen
over your skylight opening.

If your cat is stupid enough to fall off of a roof, you should probably
let it.
