I will soon have my first PV system installed, with an IG20 Fronius
I am thinking about adding a monitoring system: I would prefer the
'Interface Card Easy' solution, rather then the combination DataLogger +
DataCom (too expensive). I would then need some sort of software that reads
the RS-232 data: Has anyone experience about that?
Thanks a lot for any help on this subject.

I would think that Fronius provides the software to communicate with
their inverter, and probably for free, or at least, free with the
It's possible to write your own program, but you'll need to either be
a programmer already, or eager to learn. And also, you'll need the
specifications on the command set for the inverter. Some
manufacturers provide it, others do not. If you're really intent on
writing your own program, please email me. It's a nontrivial exercise.

Thank you for the answer.
Actually, Fronius provides the software (for free) with the DataLogger +
DataCom solution, not with the 'Interface Card Easy' I am planning to use.
For this latter, the protocol is available:
If not too difficult, I would like to write a program to communicate with
the card. I was looking for any example that may already exist (I have been
told that old QBasic should allow this). If you have some hints, that would

If you are a java programmer, I can send you source for a little
program I wrote to communicate with my PV Powered inverter, take an
energy reading, log it to a file, and exit. It's about 4 pages, and
requires the installation of the [free] rxtx library. It could be
modified to do what you want, but if you're not a java person, it will
be hard to work with. If you're interested, EMAIL me, and I'll email
you back, as it would be messy to post source to this forum.
There is also a program for the Palm called Portabella, which you can
use as a tester to send arbitrary bytes over RS-232 to your inverter,
to see the responses. The source for that is public licensed, I
think, so you could modify it to suit your needs. But, you would need
to be a palm programmer, which takes some learning. You would also
need an older Palm PDA, with a serial port. This is a nice solution
if you're willing to do the work, because you can have the PDA wake
up, say, only every 6 hours to take a reading, then go back to sleep,
taking just a fraction of a watt average draw.
If some flavor of BASIC works with the serial port, that's probably
the least trouble to program.
One final thought, and sorry for stating the obvious, but did you try
asking Fronius support what software they might recommend with the
Interface Card Easy?

Anyone using the Fronius inverter add-ons?
