A friend of mine sent me a picture of the contacts on the back of his panels.
His panel has 4 contacts, with diodes connected between.  A picture is worth
1000 words, so here's a link to it.

I'm thinking that they are bypass diodes between segments of his panel (155W)?
Its been 20 years since I've seen diodes in school. The end with the stripe is
the negative?

I believe therefore that he'll attach leads to the left-most and right-most
contacts. Ultimately he'll connect 4 of these panels in series for a 48V system.

Other way around.

contacts.

It would seem that way. I see no other way to hook it up. You should see
1/3 the voltage across each set of terminals, and the full voltage
across both ends.

I'm not a PV person, but know a bit about electrity.

It depends how you look at it. Think of a diode with the picture
painted on it and then the space was limited so they erased all but
the straight line (arrow gone)

The other thing I have heard is that the line is the back of the
letter "K" for cathode.

Most PV panels come with a data sheet showing connections for series or
parallel of their panels.

I suggest you contact manufacturer for this information before you try and
connect them.

Some have 2 diodes others have 2 diodes.

My BP Solar panels have 2 diodes.

The stripe goes toward the electrical flow...its not really a positive or
negitive.
