I have just read with interest an article where the writer cut his
energy usage in half. Of greatest amazement to me was that he cut his power
usage from 40,000kwh to less than 20,000kwh a year.
Firstly this reduction is fantastic, but I have to ask, how the hell can
you use that much power anyway? A consumption of 40000 kwh works out at over
100kwh a day!! Thats insane. I initially thought there was an extra '0' in
his figures, but if you read on he breaks down his power use, and clarifies
where the saving s were made.
I have a 1700w solar set up on the roof that is connected to the grid.
The system produced 2400kwh last year, and is on target to make a similar
amount this year. This set up produced enough power to meet all our needs
and to offset the supply charge ($30 a quarter) that we incur. This means we
use less power in a year, that the author was using in a month!

I admit we have gas for hot water, cooking and heating in winter, but
the gas bills total $750 for the year. I was interested in how much power
other people consume?

Well, interesting your claim.

Now, what is your real energy consumption. You seem to be saying that
you used 2400 kWh for the year, that's 200 kWh/month or around 6.6 kWh
per day.

How much energy did that $750 dollars buy in gas?

How much energy in petrol does your transport (car, motorcycle, other) use?

You see there is far more to ones energy use than electricity. Did you
ever consider working out your real energy requirements. And I mean
everything.

George,
My question was in relation to electricity consumption within
the house, not how much total energy I as a person consume. The article that
I was referring to did also go into ways he had reduced his petrol and gas
usage.
To keep this in context, I was amazed that my house's total
electricity consumption is less than 2600kwh a year compared to another
person who stated his house was using over 40000kwh. That is a huge
difference.  Going from the replies that have been posted here by others, it
looks like 40000 is way over the top.

Ok. My electrical energy use is 1.2kWh/day or 438kWh/year.

My point is that reductions in electrical energy use are usually off set
by increases in other energy use.

My house runs on electricity, LPG and wood.

WE, as an electrical energy delivery company, has investigated billing
complaints (now this was ten years ago) of over $2500 per month in
electricity usage. People do stupid things.
