TWO Japanese companies will build the first ship to have propulsion
engines partially powered by solar energy.
Solar panels have already been installed on large vessels for power in
crew quarters, but Japan's biggest shipping line Nippon Yusen KK and
Nippon Oil Corp said their solar panels would help conserve up to 6.5
percent of fuel oil used.
The solar ship has been designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by
1-2 percent, about 20 tonnes per year, according to Nippon Oil's
energy system development department.
The ship is scheduled for completion this December with technicians
currently working on ways to overcome damage to the panels caused from
salt and vibration.
