Cool.  Now all we need is something real.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that there is research going on.  But
I clearly recall reading a magazine article in high school that claimed that
PV was going to be competetive with othe power sources within the next two
years.  I graduated from high school in 1979.

It's good to be optimistic, but it is also hard to maintain enthusiasm when
so few of these developments ever see daylight.

Personally I'm keeping a close eye on Nanosolar.  It appears that they are
actually shipping a product, now if I can just get these inexpensive panels
for home.

PV was predicted to cost 50 cents a watt in 2000, we arnt even close.
As for Nanosolar, all they have claimed is that they have made solar
panels for $ a watt.
No one has been able to verify this claim.
Nanosolar claim they are shipping solar panels to an undisclosed buyer
and at an undisclosed price.
But try and buy some panels off them for $ a watt, and see how far
you get.

 They may be $ per watt and the buyer was disclosed but, your price is
$0/watt as they come with verbal abuse and shipping damage. Value adds

Where have they made that claim?

There is a BIG difference between the statement "we beleive will make us the
first company capable of profitably selling solar panels for as little as
$.99/watt" and a statement that they ARE selling a panel at that $/watt.

When companies start developing any competative product the must try to
predict the prices.  If they had predicted the price to be $0/watt it is
unlikely they would have continued development.

I would expect that initial prices would be higher than the predicted
$/watt, perhaps even higher than the going rate (solarbuzz reports the
current US price at $.83 per watt), but that over time the price would go

I have no reason to think that any of their press releases have been
falsified.  But I agree it would raise confidence to see 3rd party
confirmation.  I am not suprised that they are being somewhat secretvive
about their initial product since it may not achieve their intial
expectatations.  Sometimes bad press is hard to get over with an initial
start-up company.  From what I have seen, they have been making more
announcments as they have achieved their goals.

I still find their periodic reports of production achievements to at least
give the impression that their product is far more real today than a
prediction from an MIT lab.

 Nanosolar Ships First Commercial Panels

After five years of product development - including aggressively pipelined
science, research and development, manufacturing process development,
product testing, manufacturing engineering and tool development, and factory
construction - we now have shipped our first product, the Nanosolar Utility

We are grateful to everyone who supported us through all these years and the
many occasions where there appeared to be mile-high concrete walls in our
path; the unusual intensity and creativity of our team deserves all the
credit for achieving this major milestone today.

Our product is defining in more ways I can enumerate here but includes:

- the world's first commercial solar panel based on a printed solar cell;

- the world's first thin-film solar cell with a back-contact;

- the world's lowest-cost solar panel - which we believe will make us the
first company capable of profitably selling solar panels for as little as

- the world's highest-current thin-film solar panel - delivering five times
the current of any other thin-film panel on the market today and thus
simplifying system deployment;

- an intensely systems-optimized product with the lowest balance-of-system
cost of any thin-film panel - due to innovations in design we have included.

Today we are announcing that we have begun shipping panels for freefield
deployment in Eastern Germany and that the first Megawatt of our panels will
go into a power plant installation there.

As far as the first three of our commercial panels are concerned: Panel #1
will remain at Nanosolar for exhibit. Panel #2 can be purchased by you in an
auction on eBay starting today. Panel #3 has been donated to the Tech Museum
in San Jose.
