Hi,
Does anyone know if there's a commercially available system you can buy
which is basically a solar panel bolted on a box that contains a 12V
battery and a charge regulator that you could use as a portable power
system when doing car-based camping ?
I'm thinking something similar to my simple setup which is described
here:

I have something also nice for outdoor camping without car

Interesting for You could also be small photovoltaic sets
designed for rural areas in africa

It's a complete set with 4Ah 12V sealed lead acid battery
and solar charge regulator
