Hi,

Does anyone know if there's a commercially available system you can buy
which is basically a solar panel bolted on a box that contains a 12V
battery and a charge regulator that you could use as a portable power
system when doing car-based camping ?

I'm thinking something similar to my simple setup which is described
here:

I have something also nice for outdoor camping without car

Interesting for You could also be small photovoltaic sets
designed for rural areas in africa

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for:

And at 60 Euros (AUS$00) is sounds like a bargain.
