After reading this NG and the 12 volt NG I started looking at where my
electric was being used.
I did a few things to cut power losses.
I plugged my TV into the cable box ..ok the cable box still uses power but
the TV gets shut down (not on stand-by)
I replaced light bulbs with 30 watt florescent bulbs (called day-light
blubs from home depot) Those things are bright!
I pluged all the transformers on the computers into the power strip so when
I turn off the power strip the transformers are off.
I leave 3 of the 12volt lights (the ones that come with the harbor freight
45 watt pv kit) running off my solar system, on all night instead of a lamp.
I am running the cell phone chargers, lap top, my 2 meter ham radio and my
HF ham radio, aa battery charger off of my solar system..I will add more as
(note: My HF rig uses 20 amps @ 12 volts during transmit, My 2 meter rig
uses 10 amps)
We also turn off the ceiling fans when we leave the room.
Here is a list from my electric usage comparing last year to this year in
JAN-05 1393 KwH JAN-06 675 KwH 52% drop
FEB-05 1237 KwH FEB-06 629 KwH 49% drop
MAR-05 1157 KwH MAR-06 616 KwH 47% drop
APR-05 1318 KwH APR-06 566 KwH 57% drop
The solar system does not make a big difference YET in my KwH used. It is
mostly the changes I did, listed above.
We have not changed our lifestyle, just made a few changes in the way
transformers were pluged in, changed some light bulbs and turned off stuff
when we were not in the room.

Now if we could just get about 100 Million other people to do that!

Or even one million, to start with.
Great oaks ...

I think that is suppose to be the idea of the market system and self =
The idea is that if people see that their electric bills could be lower, =
they will do
what it takes to install compact flourecents and get rid of parasitic =
It may just be that most people in the US are too lazy and just =
don't care about
things like that. I look at recycling in the US as an example for hope. =
have to recycle, but many do, because it is the right thing. Maybe when =
electricity conservation as the right thing, in view of the bigger =
picture, they might
just do something for once.
Look at patriotism, the support our troops stuff. When people =
connect doing the
right thing with doing the right thing for their country, you just might =
tap into what
is required to get them "off the dime".

I think that most people just do not know..
Take an item pluged into a transformer. Most people do not know that the
transformer still uses power when the item is off and that 20 transformers
Take a lightbulb...if you change a 100watt bulb that costs $ to a 30 watt
that puts out the same amount of light but costs $ it will not make a large
impact on your bill.
What most do not understand is that you do not have to change every bulb at
once but if you do it over say 4 months and end up changeing every bulb
possible the energy saveing adds up big time.
I think that most people just look at the upfront costs, not the fact the
lights will last 10 times longer and pay for themselfs quickly.
It seems that most people in the USA wants instant gratification and are
not willing to wait for it....
