My newreader has shown an explosion of SPAM postings in this group.
Is everyone else getting the same effect, or do I need to find a new
usenet service? The group is pretty much unreadable now.

Jeff if you reset your news reader software the large majority of the spam
will be gone.
Hopefully will be back to normal.

There was one person who mail bombed the newsgroup. They posted over a
thousand messages, all of them nearly identical. Clearly they intended
to make this newsgroup unusable. I do not know any particular way to
filter out these messages, apart from marking everything prior to today
as 'already read'.
That said, repeat performances like this should be few and far between
because such vandalism is against every ISP charter and, for all I
know, it's even a crime these days. This spam attack should have lit
up warnings at more than one ISP, got their account canceled and their
parents or appropriate authorities notified.
In a few days the newsgroup should be back to normal, however useful
that may be.

I never saw any of that. I guess it was stopped upstream.

I got the same thing. I just selected all and deleted.
