For what it's worth, I terminated my water service today.... I have not used
any city water for the last four years now, and feel confident that I could
go on, without city water.... I have have my own rainwater catchment system
for several years now and it works really good.... I terminated my Natural
Gas service two months ago, and haven't missed the monthly minimum bill
which was over $11 a month if 'No' gas was used.... Since the Houston city
water rates were raised this week by 10% to 30%, plus additional annual
increases after this year.... and it didn't make sense to continue paying
the increasing minimum bill anymore with no water used.... so, like the gas
service, the water service is history now...

Anyway, two utilities are now down, and two more to go... the phone and the
electricity utilities are still connected. I am experimenting with my PV
system to see if cutting off the grid will work.... I do have my electric
grid usage down to 2 kwh a month, but, there are a few places that I use
electric power with larger loads, like the Microwave oven, and the Electric
Yard Trimmer.... and I plan to add a refrigerator soon to my PV setup, and
don't know if I have the PV power to easily handle all these loads during
extended cloudy weather...  so Electric power termination is still in the
future, maybe next year.... but for now, the City Water service, and the
Natural Gas service are history...

Good job, Gig, keep us informed!  Do you have broadband internet
access?  If so, you might be able to do some kind of VOIP and lose the
phone line...

Just remember that there is the 911 service.  It may be worth your

even though we pay for it.

If you have cell service and an old operable cell phone, you can still dial
911.
Costs you nothing.

Depending on your phone habbits, some cell service plans can be cheaper than
a hard line.

It might be worth mentioning that I have a couple of old Cell Phones.... I
keep one of them plugged in all the time in the house, and the second cell
phone I keep in the glove compartment of my car.... and even though the
phone service is not connected, the 911 emergency service always works... so
both cell phones are still usable in an emergency.... if the wired phone
system goes out in a storm or for some other reason, I will still have a 911
phone for emergency communications.... and this service is free.
