i always think of this, i wanted to build a "Dugout"  ive seen onein Utah an
OLD homesteader cabin that was delapidated.
picture this.  Railroad ties up on end from front to back creating
sidewalls, RR-beams over top, firepit at back with stovepipe exit, cieling
sloping downward towards back, entryway was  lower than cieling also to
prevent heat escape.
that was it, dirt floors, really respectful, must have been morman, and if
anybody is interested in seeinig them, go to the nobody town of Thompson
Utah, theres also an Amtrak stop there and a restaurant.  its trulynobody
ville and restaurant looked ok and had a few people dining and one train
either passed thru or stopped while i was out exploring, i spent the night
in that dugout and had a small campfire, across the dirt road and creek was
a HUGE OLD cottonwood tree and a ADOBE brick delapidated cabin, and down the
way were Anasazi and more recent tribes Carvings on the walls.

I think a dug out is a good idea.  my idea was to get a tractor to dig out a
HUge square hole and into a hillside, pile up dirt in frontyard, use beam
supports in corners and center spots of hole and cave, beam supports all
leading from outside points into a huge center TREE BEAM atleast 16 inches
in diameter, and that being the showpiece of the living room, bark finish.
fill in remaining cieling space with more smaler beams ini circular
patterns, Make two or three central beams for rectangular wide house and
then basic plywood top with tar paper, then plastic sheeting, then a small
layer of earthen from fron yard pile, then maybe some turpentine permanent
lasting insectiside, then the mound of dirt more than two feet thick making
the roof, back wall, and 3/4 of side walls, sloping down to about a foot or
three of ground level in front yard.  Put solar panels in trees to hide or
on wood/metal/log roof overhang of front of house or on earthen on sun
facing earthen side of house.  grow some flowers on your roof, lol..Wouldnt
it be nice to build next to a huge mound of compost, or use landfill compost
for bottom layers of roof mound and hook in fuelcell technology as heat of
sun heats roof top and occasional watering of flowers or garden or just
lowcut grass will make more energy for your dugout home.

i like these ideas and by no means above living this way, sounds like a good
setting for the countryside cottage home.

wolfhedd.

if you make wide enough, windows can be in front and all rooms except for
back laundry or bath or soemthing can be rectangular and have window space
at front and  long skylight tubes for rooms in back.  heating and cooling
need will be lessened by a dugout.

Don't put the panels in tress as the leafs will have a dramatic effect
on the amount of powere you produce.  Also consider wind, and better
yet small scale hydro if you have a stream

of course.  i guess i was thinking of on a mast above the treetop slightly,
or keep the tree pruned if on a shorter mast.
wolfpak.  trying to be superconservative to minimize visual aspect as well.
lol
