I have  remote location where I need to operate a 1.5 horse AC motor
for short periods of time, typically 2 minutes per week.  This is a
good location for photovoltaic but since I am unsure of myself, what
if I hook my pickup battery up, through an inverter, to try it out?
The motor pulls 10 amps running and 12 amps startup spike.  I see
advertisements for 1800 watt inverters for around $150 US.   Not bad
for the experiment.  What have I not thought of?  Slacker

Keep the motor running. You'll be pulling 100A for those 2 minutes

Bob:  Thanks - Ok, lets say I only run the electric motor for 1 minute
(That puts it in the easy range of my battery amps), will sucking
amperage at that rate damage my battery or would I need a couple of
batteries  in parllael?Leo

If this is an application where you will be visiting the site every
time the motor is turned on, I think you'll probably be fine just
using an inverter powered off your truck.  It would be awfully
expensive to put up solar and maintain batteries for the sake of a few
minutes a week.  You might even get a little gas-powered generator,
keep that in a shack, and fire that up for the few minutes time.  That
would be cheaper than solar.

You might be able to win with solar if you can adjust the load to be
only a small amount of power, but all week long.  For instance, if you
are filling a stock tank, you could run a tiny flow from a small pump
constantly, rather than trying to fill the whole thing in one shot in
a few minutes.  I don't know what your load is, though, very possibly
it can't be adapted in this manner.

Roderick:  Actually it is a hanger. The 1.5 hp motor raises a bifold
door and I only fly once or so a week at most.  I need to keep it as
simple as possible because on rare occasions someone other than myself
will need access so it should be button punching simple. The power
demand is fixed so I have to design around that.  Thanks for your
response.  Leo
