Ok I am confused here.
Say you have a 85 watt solar panel rated at 4.8 amps ( at 17 volts)
What happens when it goes thru your charge controler and drops to 12
volts? 7.08 amps@12 volts?

yes. an 85 watt panel will produce 7 watts at full sun. I have a 90 watt
array that produces 7.5 amps at full sun.

Nope it would be 4.8 amps @ 12 volts = 57 watts, the rest is wasted as heat.
Now of course if you had an MPPT controller it might be 5.8 amps @12 volts =
70 watts
Forget getting the full 85 into your batteries.

My chargemate disagrees with you. I show a full 7.5 amps coming in from
my 90 watt quadlams, at 13.8 volts.
