Hello,

I'm new to solar technology and would like pointers on a very basic
installation idea.

I have a large metal roofed shed with an south facing non-shaded roof,
at an angle of about 35 degrees; as the shed gets very hot on summer
days I would like to install a fan to move the air.

How can I go about using a solar panel to power the fan? Would it be
possible just to link the motor to the panel output? Or would a better
way to go be to run the fan from a 12 volt battery and use the panel to
feed the  battery?

Fixing an aluminum framed panel to the roof will be very easy, from
that point on I'm in the dark.

Any suggestions/pointers gratefully recieved.

Thanks

A few ideas.

If you want to actually cool the shed, you could try a solar powered
attic fan like this one:

To just move the air, you could use the same thing and use it inside.

See above link. Using a panel, battery and fan now gets you into
probably using a charge controller, timers and other more expensive
items. You don't want to overcharge a battery, so you'd need to control
the charging. Solar can be a slippery slope with money going down it if
you're not careful. If all you need to do is move the air, go with a
solar fan kit unless you want to build it yourself.

Now as far as putting panels on the roof, I'm sure that there's going
to be others that will tell you the hotter a panel gets, the less power
it puts out. So you've got that to think about if the roof really heats
up. Panels on a pole would probably be a better option to keep them
cooler.

Since usually the only time you need to move air is when the sun shines, no
need for a battery, and makes it a lot less complicated.

What's wrong with a simple wind turbine (a go-roundy-thing)?
They move a lot of air, and are a bit cheaper than solar solutions.

You could skip the wind turbine and just have a roof vent.
If they wanted extra powerful roof venting then a solar
chimney seems to be in order.
