The most northerly building in the world 100% solar heated. St. George's
School in Wallasey near Liverpool is a solar heated building, designed 50
yaers ago and opened in 1961.

100% solar heated and cost zero to heat and few CO2 emissions in 50 years. I
believe Wallasey council were going to pull it down at one stage until it
was grade 2 listed, which stopped this philistine act. I also believe they
have messed up some of the solar mechanisms and putting carpets in curtailed
its performance - the 1 foot concrete floors were part of the thermal mass.
Amazing, not one school was ever built like it, after a proven success. The
extension buildings were not built to solar principles either.  Knowledge of
solar buildings has moved on in 50 years and improvements by implementing
electronic control and heat recovery and ventilation could be added to even
enhanced the performance and comfort conditions further.

St. Georges school is regarded world-wide as one of the most important
buildings in the progress of solar heated buildings.  The backup heating
system was not even used in the very cold winter of 1963. This school was
built before any fuel shortages and eco trends. People marvelled at this
school. Even today they restrict the group visits to look at the design
aspects of the school. During the 1970s when the Arabs had us by the short
ones, people from all over Europe went to see the building. This school
worked, yet not one other was ever built emulating it, never mind enhancing
it.  Yet it cost little over a normal school to build.

The oil companies do have a large lever on the authorities.

It is the most northerly building in the world to be 100% heated by solar
gain, disproving the claims that solar energy is not viable in the UK.

The reports says:
"Another scheme to add tinted film to reduce glare through the solar wall
was vetoed by English Heritage."

What world are these Heritage freaks lunatics in? This is a solar building
and new solar enhancements are trying to be added to improve comfort
conditions and performance and they step in the way.  Madness.

There are thousands of buildings, houses, sheds, garages, etc., which
are  not heated in any way except by sunlight, and which are further
north than Wallasey (where, incidentally, I lived when I was a small
child). For this school to be counted as the most northerly solar-
heated building, some restrictions must be placed on what is meant,
and such restrictions are bound to be controversial.

The next time Big Ben is serviced, should its mechanism be replaced
with a modern one using a quartz-crystal oscillator, or something even
more precise? This would be both more reliable and more accurate than
the existing machinery.

Most people would answer "no". Big Ben is a part of British history,
and should be preserved in its original state, as far as possible. And
English Heritage is saying essentially the same about this solar-
heated school. Modern technology would perform better, but changing
the structure of the building would destroy something of significant
historical importance.

The building is used and active. They wanted to put a tint on the glass.  EH
didn't like the colour.

Big Ben, or the Westminster Tower Clock, as Big Ben is the bell, is doing
what it was designed to do.  It is very accurate and 100% accurate using
older technology.  The solar school is not performing up to 100%.
