Just out of curiousity, if an in ground pool was sufficiently insolated on
the top and walls could the winter sun in New England warm up the 21,000
gallons via solar panels enough to keep a small 1700 square foot ranch style
home warm?

These guys in the U.K. managed to heat a whole building with the help of
a water thermal store. They have lots of data for the project on the site.

Consider forgetting the side wall insulation and consider taking the
water down to 1 degC and how much heat you may get out of the
surounding ground also.
