I live at 35*N lat, central TN. I don`t know why you think it`s
unbekievable, search passive solar homes, many have done it in colder
climates than I`m living in, it`s anchient knowledge. Doug

There is zero energy trial house built in north east Scotland at
around 57 deg N, a place not naturally blessed with winter sunshine.
Their projected whole season heating costs are around USD90 - for a
130 sq m (1400 sq ft) property.  I realise that some Americans might
have hamster cages or walk in wardrobes bigger than that.

This site has a good summary

Some might - most do not. Remember that the homes you see on TV meet
the space requirements for a video recording operation and aren't
necessarily typical (or even real).

Thanks for posting - I'll take a look. That would appear to be an
excellent cost for the area.
