I have an Amtrol BoilerMate (runs on a zone from my furnace/boiler).

A good setup with an efficient furnace, except that there's no
insulation on it as it comes (at least the several I've seen, including
one I grabbed (intending to use as a "scrap starting point for something
else, since it leaked) that appears to only need a gasket (what some
people will not do to fix a simple leak - or, I haven't seen the "real
problem" with it yet). Quite easy to remedy the lack of insulation, to
whatever level you desire...but I've seen installed setups where that
has not been done - why not, I can't imagine.

It's a Weil-McLane furnace -- supposed to be efficient.

I think there's got to be some insulation, as the outer wall is quite a bit
cooler than the water temperature ???

Ambient Temp:  71F
Side wall of tank: 86F (at hottest point)
Top of tank:    95F
Water Temp:    142F

Which would definitely make solar water heating very worthwhile if you have
the possibility (space for collectors and a storage tank).

My hot water was about a quarter of the total oil costs before, which was
about EUR 200/year here. 2 grown-ups, 3 (small) kids. During the last six
months, my oil costs were 1 EUR total (solar heating + wood heating instead
of oil during springtime).

Sorry, this wass misunderstandable.

I meant that the EUR 200 was the part of the oil needed for heating the
water. Total oil costs were EUR 800/year.
