Sure, Wankel still gets credit for an engine he didn't invent, and hasn't
been used, for decades.

Yup and Mazda haven't used a Wankel engine for decades. Wankel didn't invent
the rotary engine either.

RENESIS, A rotary engine developed from the same rotary design that Wankel
used to develop his off-shoot. The Mazda website describes this technology
in detail. Mazda never states they used a Wankel engine. Only the enthusiats
call all rotary engines "Wankel" as he is credited with developing the
rotary engine. Wankel only improved the seal system in the rotary design and
Mazda has abandoned that style of seal, rotor and ports.
