I have a fan upstairs that does not currently work. Do I replace it with
something else or improve on it. For instance put exhaust fan that work
with it to pull hot air out of the house ? The ceiling fans works as a
way to pull air out of the house right now (loud) .

Where are you?  What is the climate (temp, humnidity, etc.)?
Do you want to move air around inside, or ventilate the house by
bringing in outised air?

In in Ohio. We get 90-85 on typical summer day. Ventilate the house to
get the hot air outside .

That's fairly humid.  If the night temps don't drop much, I'd expect
you to not get TOO much cooldown running a whole house fan.

In a high, very dry climate like Colorado, it would get into the high
90s perhaps, with lots of sun, but the whole house fan cooled things
down because night temps got down to the high 60s.

ME, I'd probably go for replacing the ceiling fan, at least first
thing.  I like the Gossamer Wind brand, they have an aerodynamic shape
to the blade, remote control, and "supposedly" lower energy cost.  But
they cost some more to buy.

'sat help?
