Thanks for the response.  It does seem to me as if automotive antifreeze
should have the right properties, since the temperature range is similar,
and automotive cooling systems involve a variety of metals (copper and
aluminum radiator parts, steel engine passages, rubber hoses).

I've been told that propylene glycol is used as a food additive.  As for not
drinking the hot water, when I've got a tank full of solar heated water, it
seems a shame not to start with the pre-heated water when making a pot of
tea....

You obviously are not accustomed to making good tea or coffee.

a word of caution on hot water ... most tanks deploy a sacrificial anode
that is dissolved over years to protect the tank lining, typically
aluminum or magnesium.

Yummy, yummmy, biscuits and aluminum tea !

Hmmm, an interesting point I had never considered.

I did some googling, but did not turn up any references to this as a
potential health concern.  I did find quite a number of sites that recommend
against drinking hot water because it more readily dissolves lead, copper,
and other metals that are not healthy to ingest.

Any references for this potential problem caused by the anode rod?

The amount of metal dissolved from a sacrificial anode in a normal
hot water tank is negligable, since the water goes through the tank and
is then used up. ( Mostly in non-consumptive ways such as bathing, and
washing things. ) All other things being equal, hotter water will pick up
more stuff from the pipes and tanks than cold water.  This fellow was
talking about tapping the hot side of a recirculating water system, where
the water has gone around the loop and been sitting in the system for
months if not years.  This is a recipe to make your doctor and lawyers
rich, and you poorer and less healthy.
