Ron asked about using a hot water tank to make a solar batch collector
-- the kind where the tank sits outside in the sun in a glazed box and
absorbs heat -- like this one:
It seems like the new tanks with the foamed on insulation might be
hard to get the foam off? I was just wondering if anyone had tried
using one of the newer tanks.

A batch water heater does just that. You place a tank of water in an
insulated, glass fronted, box that points at the sun. Typically you
strip the insulation off the tank itself and paint it black. Quite
effective in the right climate.
