I see references to mylar in solar collectors, what is the purpose of
using a mylar sheet inside of a collector?

Mylar has a lot of advantages, It is impervious to steam, highly
transparent and very strong. Uncoated it fails under UV. Use it under a
UV blocking glazing.
I'm currently making double pane inside storm windows that are stackable
out of 1 mil (very cheap). And am adding mylar under my suntuf to cut
down on thermal losses. Next up is a trickle down collector with inner
mylar glazing because polycarbonate is not hot water resistant. That
holds a lot of promise.
