I have some windows that I would like to minimize solar thermal gain
from during summer.

Is there any kind of window treatment I can use? Would white or
metalic curtains help, or have only a minimal effect?

There is window film that blocks most of the solar energy. It is an
architectural item used for office buildings; however, I don't know where to
buy it. Curtains that reflect light back out should help, but there is a
greenhouse effect from the window glass.
