a freind asked me if I was still interested in solar, as he has a
friend who aquired a trailerload of air type solar panels.

his freind is a bit of a drive, and i'd like to get an estimate about
how much they are worth before i make him an offer. as I dont even
know the size, this will be difficult. my friend will be supplying me
with a phone number so i should be able to get some info on them.

but what should i ask? lets assume he doesnt know anything about them
like brand, model, materials, or such. what can i do to determine if I
should go over there with a trailer? they are located a couple hours
drive away so I'd hate to make the trip twice.

Here are some commercial suppliers of air collectors -- there are not
too many.

The metal frame and glazed with glass ones tend to be pretty pricey --
in the $5+ per sqft as I recall.
A little hard to understand given the simplicity of some of them.

If they are SRCC certified, that would be good.  It would mean they
passed the SRCC testing, and you could look up the report here:

But, not many air collectors have been certified.

I would ask how they are constructed, frame material, glazing
material, size, ...   If you can get a manufacturer, you could
probably find their website.

You can also make air collectors that work well and are durable for as
little as $ per sqft.

Things worth asking:

What are the dimensions? You won't get more out than goes in, and the
latter is determined primarily by the glazed area.

You can ask their operating temperature (how warm is the air that
comes out) in full sun. Very unintuitively, hotter is _not_ better.

Ask if they require an electrical connection, and if so ask about the
control system and amount of power used.

You can ask about heat delivered and efficiency in full sun, but I'd
be a bit skeptical of the answers - this is a bit like asking a
salesman about the gas mileage of a used car.

It might be worthwhile to make a deal that allows you to get one to
test before you pay for the rest - and if you can set it up that way,
it'd probably be worth the second trip (either to return the first or
pick up the remainder that you want).
