Thought I would build a concentrating trough collector - maybe 8 foot
long to experiment with. Want to use plywood for the parabola ribs.
I've got steel or aluminum sheet available for the reflector backing. What
could I use for the reflector surface itself? Silver Mylar glued to the
sheet metal? Something else? Needs to be durable and able to handle the
Saw an experiment a few years ago at a California university where they
put the boiler tube in a vacuum sealed glass cylinder to prevent losses.
Anyone doing this kind of thing today?
Any ideas, thoughts, parts sources, etc would be appreciated.

A company up here was trying to do it commercially, don't know if they
have it officially on the market yet, or if it's still beta.

It may be possible to use an acrylic mirror. As long as the parabola
is not too curved you may be able to bend an acrylic mirror without
cracking it. I have not tried this, but acrylic mirrors are tough and
UV resistant, although I have no idea how long they would last
You can get an 8'x4' sheet for a little over $00 Canadian dollars.

One thing ocurred to me after my last post. If you plan to use some
sort of adhesive to secure an acrylic mirror, then be very careful.
The adhesives that are designed for acrylics WILL damage the
reflective backing on the mirror. The salesman told me that there
would be "bleeding", that is, the spoiled area would be larger than
just the spots where the adhesive is.
You may have to consider some sort of mechanical arrangement for
securing the mirror in the proper curvature.
