I am in the middle of a batch heater build and decided to make it a 2
tank system instead of a 1 tank system. I have 2 hot water heater tanks,
one from an electric and one from a gas hot water. The one from the gas
hot water heater has a 4" hole down the center from or for the flue. My
question: Should I be using the tank with the hole down the center as
the primary or secondary tank in the system for best output or either
will position yield the same temps? The primary tank, once the system is
up to temp and using water, will preheat the water going into the second
tank and because of stratification and surface area based on the 2
different tank designs, I am thinking that one way will be better than
the other...Anyone run into a similar situation or have any thoughts
that would help?
Thanks,
Dave

I should think that if you plug the hole, it doesn't matter which position
it's in.  But with the hole left open, air could circulate up through the
tank and remove some of the heat you want to contain.
