Yes we're living in the house (well camping) The system isn't running
yet. The job is about 75% complete.  I want to get it all up and
running for this coming Winter. Cold weather here in the UK runs from
Octoberish to to Arprilish.
 At the moment I've got the roof all propped up and I've taken out the
front (South side) of the building, I'm putting in V.large windows to
maximise solar gain. However there's about another two years work to
finish everything completely.
Re heat losses, I hope to get losses down to less than 1 Kw for the
whole house for Delta t@ degF.
This is the only way forward for 100% solar heating I believe. ie start
by getting losses down to absolute minimum and maximise passive solar
heating.
The heat store is always going to be the problem in this sort of
project for the active heat collection.
One problem I've already noted is that living in the solar heat
collector (conservatory) is not necessarily compatable with collecting
heat.

Nick Pine had the solar closet idea using a conservatory and air heater
inside to heat water bottles stored maybe in the roof space (water stores
about 3 to 4 times as much as masonry). This acts as the heat store. If you
only need 1 kW/hr then this may be ideal.  Look it up. Nick may point to the
web site and give a few lines on it.  It may or may not be too late for you,
but worth a look.

If you haven't done the roof yet, how about a full solar panel roof and a
large thermal store to get you over 3 or 4 days of cloud.  Will do the DHW
too for most of the time.

Thinking in BTU/hr. All this switching from metric to imperial.  Best just
stay in one system, but that is not the real world yet.

I have a 6" thick  insulated door between the conservatory and the
living space.
I have insulated shutters fitted to the windows. These are thin plywood
boxes filled with 4"  foam slabs, foamed in with the aerosol stuff.  I
have seals fitted, they're virtually airtight, the smaller ones have
lift off hinges and could be removed in Summer. The big ones are to be
horizontally split and fold down onto the window cill, I haven't done
thise yet.

The conservatory and house extension is earth shielded. The retaining
wall  is  also part of the heat store.

If you read my earlier posts you'll see I also have active solar
heating as well as passive.

Re insulating the floor, there are major problems here.
In the conservatory and new extension, the floor is concrete. I have
put 4" of foam insulation below it, also peripheral insulation. This is
also part of the heat store.
Part of the original building has suspended timber floors, I'm fitting
insulation beneath these.
Another part of the original building has solid concrete floor,
fortunately only a small area. Ideally these should be taken up and
insulation put below but I can't be arsed, so I'm putting peripheral
insulation on the outer walls.

1 Kw... That is a rate of conversion of energy.
1Kwh is an amount of energy, ie 1Kw expended for one hour, or 500w for
2 hours or 250 w for 4 hours &c.
1Kw/hr  is not anything!

I did consider the idea of digging a big hole and installing a "petrol
tank" (gasoline in your parlance) The hole to be lined with foam slabs
and filled with concrete and the house built on to top of it. The tank
would store water as the heat store.  Probably a GRP tank rather than
steel.  The surrounding concrete would be part of the heat store also.
(My original plan was to demolish the existing house and build another.
But I had problems with the town planners and so decided to modify the
existing house.)

Another problem I've encountered is that there's a heat bridge in the
brick walls from below up into the living space. I fancy this could be
a problem in the suspended floor part of the building where of course
outside air circulates. Maybe I'll clad the walls below the floor  with
some foam slab.
